A documentary, released this Wednesday, reveals how some of the methods used in Operation Car Wash, questioned even by the UN, have polluted justice across Brazil and been replicated by prosecutors and judges.

The series “Contaminated Justice – Lavajatista Theater of Operation Calvário in Paraíba” brings together nine episodes showing how the investigation was conducted to impeach former Paraíba governor Ricardo Coutinho (2011-2018) and his political group. The accusatory act was christened by the Public Ministry of Operation Calvary, which is a biblical allusion.

At the end of 2019, almost a year after leaving the Paraíba government, Ricardo Coutinho was accused of leading a criminal organization that embezzled public money, particularly in the Health field, through contracts with the Red Cross. Along with the former governor, important figures from his political group were also arrested.

According to the authors of the documentary, Eduardo Reina and Camilo Toscano, the episodes show the illegalities committed in the operation and shed light on the structural problems in the current Brazilian justice system.

In addition to the similarities between the two operations – Lava Jato and Calvário – the documentary also uncovers unconstitutional violations and crimes during Calvário, revealing a deeper problem for them and polluting Brazilian justice: the use of investigations Corruption as a weapon of destruction in the political sphere, called Lawfare. a phenomenon.

For them, the series shows how the judicial and political aristocracy acted in the state. Rather than being the focus of national media attention, they ignored STF decisions, disrespecting legal norms and human rights. The authors claim that the Lava Jato and Calvário operations hijacked a section of the press that reproduced the reported news without checking the facts and data reported by the prosecution, using the transmission of selected information. The fight against corruption has been a strong argument for gaining public opinion and allowing the abuses committed in the investigations.

The series “Contaminated Justice – Lavajatista Theater of Operation Calvário in Paraíba” begins this Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM on TV Conjur (Legal Counsel).

Almost two years after the former governor’s arrest, reporters Eduardo Reina and Camilo Toscano launched an investigation into the Calvário operation. After reading more than 10,000 pages of prosecution and defense, in addition to the journalistic investigation, and dozens of interviews with those involved, they argue how the Calvário operation adopted a range of illegal procedures and conduct in the attack against Coutinho and his political group. .

Journalists also allege that the main informant, Daniel Gomes da Silva, the Red Cross’ agent for contracts in Paraíba, wrote excerpts of his whistleblower from inside a cell in Papuda, Brasília, where he stayed before signing a whistleblowing agreement. and be released.

In the prosecution documents, many of these conversations are told in the first person, because they were given by Daniel, not by an expert, as his own defence admits. The current governor, João Azevedo, and his election campaign have been cited countless times in award-winning accusations and ignored countless times by the Paraíba justice.

Operation Calvário was led by judge Ricardo Vital of the Court of Justice of Paraíba and prosecutor Octávio Paulo Neto from Gaeco (Special Action Group for the Suppression of Organized Crime). In the local press, they were called Sergio Moro of Paraíba and Deltan Dallagnol.
