Mexican journalist Luis Enrique Ramírez was murdered in the state of Sinaloa, making him the ninth communicator to die brutally in the country in 2022, the Office of the Attorney General and Reporters Without Borders reported on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, the body found on the road (…) has been confirmed to be that of journalist Luis Enrique Ramírez Ramos,” Sinaloa prosecutor Sara Quiñónez said on Twitter.
We add our sincerest condolences to his family and our commitment to work to clarify this fact.
The body of 59-year-old Ramírez was found outside of Culiacán, the capital city of Sinaloa, on Thursday morning, after he was reported missing Wednesday night.
“It was definitely a murder. The body was found outside Culiacán and was found wrapped in plastic,” Balbina Flores, RSF’s representative in Mexico, told AFP.
Ramírez was a columnist for the local newspaper El Debate and the founder of the Fuentes Fidedignas news site.
He previously worked for the national newspapers El Financiero, El Nacional and La Jornada.
According to the RSF and local organization Artículo 19, Ramírez is the ninth journalist killed this year in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries for the press.
Other victims: Armando Linares, Juan Carlos Muñiz, Heber López, Lourdes Maldonado, Margarito Martínez, Roberto Toledo, José Luis Gamboa and Jorge Luis Camero. The latter was shot on February 24, two weeks after he left his post as mayor of Empalme in Sonora state.
According to RSF, around 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000.
