Washington, May 5, 2022 (AFP) – The United States said on Thursday that Brazilians should have confidence in their democracy after President Jair Bolsonaro cast doubt on the electoral system.
Bolsonaro, one of former US President Donald Trump’s closest allies, claims, without proof, that Brazil’s electronic voting system is fraudulent.

“The United States has a lot of trust in Brazil’s democratic institutions. The country has a solid track record of free and fair elections, with transparency and high levels of voter turnout,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price.
“It is important that Brazilians have confidence in their electoral systems as they await the elections at the end of the year, and that Brazil, through these elections, can once again show the world the lasting solidity of Brazilian democracy.” Price continued.
President Joe Biden has tried to avoid public confrontations with Bolsonaro and sought cooperation whenever possible, including on the climate issue so important to Brazil.
Bolsonaro openly acknowledged a cautious visit last year from CIA chief William Burns, who is often tasked with relaying sensitive messages from the US government.
