Police said armed thieves robbed a Chanel jewelery and watch store in central Paris on Thursday and fled by motorcycle.
The robbery took place during the daylight hours in the Place Vendome district in central Paris, where another robbery of the same style took place last year.
In a video on Twitter that police say is real, one of the robbers at the Chanel store on Rue de la Paix appears to have what looks like an automatic weapon. Seconds later, three other thieves, dressed in black and wearing helmets, emerged from the store with suitcases, and the four of them quickly fled on two motorcycles.
“It all happened so fast and unfortunately the cops who came first were on bikes,” one person recording the event told Reuters. He refused to identify himself.
Chanel said no one was hurt and she was working with the police. The company did not disclose the value of the stolen goods. Police said they had no information on the identity of the criminals.
The French luxury fashion house’s unit on Avenue de la Paix is a temporary store selling watches and jewellery, set up while the main and most iconic unit on Place Vendome is being renovated ahead of its planned opening in the coming weeks.
Several jewelers in Paris have been damaged by armed robberies in recent months.
