The UN Security Council on Friday approved a unanimous statement – the first since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 – providing “strong support” to UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres, “in finding a peaceful solution” to the conflict. ito.
Drafts of Norway and Mexico, the statement, obtained byAFP
did not go so far as to support a mediation by Antonio Guterres, who offered his goodwill for it, as provided in the first version of the text discussed since Thursday. The approved declaration, however, represents the first demonstration of the Security Council’s unity since the start of the war. Shortly after the outbreak of the conflict, Russia vetoed a resolution condemning it and demanding the return of its troops to Russian soil.
Very briefly, the text suggests that the Security Council expressed its deep concern about maintaining peace and security in Ukraine.
The 15 members of the Council also recall their statement that all Member States have undertaken, under the Charter of the United Nations, the obligation to settle their international disputes by peaceful means.
Finally, the text asks Antonio Guterres to present a report after the adoption of the declaration.
Marginalized since the conflict began, the UN, whose mission is to guarantee world peace, has not yet imposed itself as a possible mediator for a peaceful settlement of the conflict. It invades Ukraine and the surrounding countries in a role that is largely humanitarian.
