The Ukrainian military said today that fighting continues at the Azovstal steelworks in the southeastern city of Mariupol, accusing Russia of “wanting to destroy” the last fighters there, despite declaring a unilateral ceasefire.
“The Russian invaders are busy trying to block and destroy the Ukrainian troops in the Azovstal region,” the Ukrainian army said in a statement.
According to the Kyiv Armed Forces, Moscow troops “continue the offensive with the support of aircraft to seize control of the factory”.
On Wednesday night, Moscow announced that its forces would respect a three-day ceasefire from 05:00 GMT (2:00 GMT) on Thursday to allow the evacuation of about 200 civilians who are still refugees at the large steelworks, according to the mayor. Mariupol, Vadim Boichenko.
Denis Prokopenko, the commander of the Azov battalion, which commands the defense of the region, said in a video that Russian forces managed to penetrate the industrial complex, referring to “violent and bloody clashes”.
