LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday and agreed to work more closely on security issues, calling for talks with Russia to reinforce its “false narrative” about the conflict in Ukraine.

A breakdown of the British government said the two leaders, who had a strained relationship over a range of issues, promised to rekindle the “Anglo-French” relationship after Johnson congratulated Macron on his election victory.

Johnson and Macron agreed that military forces should coordinate more closely in efforts to isolate Russia, as well as long-term security and economic support for Ukraine.

He made a call against negotiations with Russia on terms that gave credence to the Kremlin’s misrepresentation of the invasion, but assured that it was a decision for the Ukrainian government,’ the British transcript reads.

Macron met frequently with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the first few weeks of the campaign. The two spoke again this week.

Johnson and Macron also discussed the post-Brexit trade deal for Northern Ireland, which has caused tensions to escalate, and Johnson reiterated the UK’s “serious and ongoing concerns” and his belief that serious changes are needed to keep the peace.
