GENEVA, May 6 (EFE)- At least 3,309 civilians have been killed and 3,493 injured since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, the United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday.
In the statement made by the office chaired by High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet, it was stated that 234 of the dead were underage and 330 young people under the age of 18 were injured during the conflict.
More than half of the UN-confirmed victims died in the Donbas region (1,754) and the remaining 1,555 died in areas under Ukrainian government control, including areas around the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mikolaiv and Odessa, among others.
Most were killed in long-range explosive artillery strikes, including heavy artillery bombardments and multiple launch rocket systems, according to the UN office.
The agency insists that actual civilian casualties may be much higher than has been confirmed so far, as there is no full data from areas of violent fighting, such as the surrounding cities of Mariupol, Izium and Popasna.
The UN reminded that the deliberate targeting of civilians or non-military infrastructure (hospitals, schools, etc.) is considered a war crime under international law.
