One person was killed and six others were injured Friday in a shooting on the main street in the Mexican resort town of Cancun, authorities said.
One suspect was arrested in connection with the attack, which did not take place in the city’s hotel zone, according to prosecutors in the coastal state of Quintana Roo.
The shooting took place on an avenue lined with restaurants and bars, quite far inland.
This is the latest opportunity for violence to destroy Cancun’s reputation as a getaway destination.
In March, loud gunfire was heard at Cancun International Airport, which caused flights to be suspended for nearly three hours. Authorities received reports of gunfire at the airport. Videos posted on social media showed packing travelers rushing out of a terminal.
Later, the National Guard said there was no evidence of gunshots and the explosion may have occurred after someone knocked on three freestanding vertical displays at the terminal.
Also in March, authorities found four bodies dumped in the underbrush in Cancun. They are part of a total of 13 murders committed by the Jalisco Cartel in the resort town since September 2021, authorities said. Most of the corpses were found on vacant lots or in houses.
The Caribbean coast, Mexico’s main source of tourism revenue, has been hit by endemic violence.
In January, prosecutors said the killing of two Canadians near Cancun was motivated by debts between international gangs apparently involved in drug and arms trafficking.
In late October, further south in Tulum, two tourists-one a Californian native, the other a German-were caught in the apparent battle of rival drug traffickers and killed.
