The UN warned on Sunday that more than 12.3 million Syrian children need humanitarian assistance, a record since 2011 when the conflict in Syria began.
“Millions of children continue to live in fear, uncertainty and need in Syria and neighboring countries,” said Adele Khodr, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. Said.
According to the latest figures from the UN agency, “more than 6.5 million children in Syria need assistance” and “approximately 5.8 million Syrian children in neighboring countries”.
“This is the highest number recorded since the beginning of the conflict,” Khodr said.
“Many families are struggling to survive,” the UN official said. “Prices of basic necessities, including food, are rising rapidly, partly because of the crisis in Ukraine,” he said.
UNICEF lamented the decline in international funding, saying it has received “less than half the funds needed this year” to serve those in need.
The organization said it urgently needed $20 million for cross-border operations, the only way to keep nearly a million children alive in northwestern Syria, a rebel-controlled area.
UNICEF stated that 13 thousand children have been killed or injured since 2011, 213 of whom were killed or injured in the “first three months” of 2022, adding that “The crisis in Syria is not over yet.”
Nearly half a million people have been killed since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011.
