In June, the European Commission will present a response to Ukraine’s request for urgent membership in the European Union, this Monday (9) the head of the institution, Ursula Von, says an important step before the case is presented to the bloc countries.

“The commission plans to issue an opinion in June,” Von der Leyen said on Twitter, describing a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Von der Leyen added that during this meeting he informed Zelensky that the Commission expects to receive the survey it must submit on Ukraine’s membership candidacy.

As a result of Russia’s invasion of its territory, Ukraine requested immediate accession to the European Union (EU), a step not foreseen in the bloc’s operating rules and therefore met with caution and suspicion.

Accession of a candidate country to the EU is a complex process of adapting local legislation to European ones and typically requires several years – in some cases more than ten years – of difficult negotiations.

At the end of this process, the final decision on membership belongs to the 27 member states of the bloc.

At a summit in Versailles, France in March, European leaders openly cooled Ukraine’s desire.

The last country to join the EU was Croatia in 2013, although negotiations started eight years ago in 2005 and the last chapters were completed in 2011.
