According to the Interfax news agency, Russia’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, said on Monday that peace talks with Ukraine have not stalled and are being conducted remotely.

Moscow accused Kiev of delaying negotiations and using reports of atrocities by Russian troops in Ukraine to undermine the negotiations. Russia refuses to target civilians in what it calls a “special military operation”.

Asked when face-to-face talks with Ukrainian negotiators could be held, Medinsky said, “We need more details to meet face to face.”

Ukraine and Russia have not held face-to-face peace talks since 29 March, despite meeting via video connection.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said last month that talks are at high risk of ending and angered the public for the atrocities committed by Russia in withdrawing from parts of northern Ukraine around Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described Moscow’s actions as a “special military operation” aimed at disarming Ukraine, protecting the Russians from persecution and preventing the United States and its allies from using the country to threaten Russia.

Ukraine denies Putin’s allegations of persecution and denies any threat to Russia from Ukraine or Western countries. He says he’s struggling with unprovoked land grabs.
