Sweden’s ruling Social Democratic Party said on Monday it will announce its stance on May 15th on the possibility of Stockholm to submit its NATO candidacy in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and geopolitical tensions.
A positive decision would pave the way for Sweden to make a formal application for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
“The party will announce its position on 15 May,” Social Democrats spokesperson Julia Grabe told AFP on next Sunday.
If the ruling party expresses its support for membership, the country will have a clear parliamentary majority in favor, especially if neighboring Finland, whose decision is expected in the coming days, submits its candidacy to the US-led military alliance.
Sweden and Finland have been non-aligned countries for decades, but according to various polls, public opinion has turned to support NATO membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which raised security fears.
