Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Monday that the United States has indications that the Russians are forcibly expelling Ukrainians from their country and sending them to Russia.
“I can’t say how many camps there are or what they look like,” he told reporters. “But we have signs that Ukrainians have been taken to Russia against their will,” he said.
The Ukrainian government assures that 1.2 million people have been deported to Russia and put in camps.
Russian President Vladimir Putin “does not accept or respect Ukraine’s sovereignty”, Kirby said, adding that Russia’s behavior is “unacceptable” and “not typical of a responsible power”.
“More than 1.19 million of our citizens, including more than 200,000 children, have been deported to the Russian Federation,” said Ukrainian government official Liudmila Denisova, quoted by the official communication center Spravdi.
He avoided classifying these deportations as ethnic cleansing and used the term “Russian atrocities.”
“For 75 days, [a Rússia] He has been cruel to Ukraine and to the Ukrainian people,” he said. “And they always show that we are wrong when we think we can’t be any lower.”
