Former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled the Philippines from 1965 to 1986, was elected president of the country on Monday.
According to an unofficial poll by the Election Commission, “Bongbong” – as it is known – received nearly 30 million votes, with more than 90% of the vote, more than double the liberal candidate’s current vice president, Leni Robredo.
The result marks the return of the Marcos family to power in the Philippines after their patriarch was overthrown in 1986 following a popular revolution that ended the 21-year-old regime.
All polls since the start of the campaign have shown Marcos, who has avoided electoral debate and irritating interviews, as the favorite to replace controversial Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines’ presidency. Confirmation of full results should take weeks.
