BERLIN, May 10 (EFE)- German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Tuesday that the country’s embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, will reopen for a limited time and with reduced staff. .
At a press conference with local Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in the Ukrainian capital, the member of the German Executive Committee expressed his “joy” to face a “free Kyiv”.
“To be honest, in the darkest days after February 24, I had my doubts that I would be able to say that sentence so quickly,” said Baerbock, referring to the start of the Russian invasion.
The German minister said he hopes Ukraine will quickly receive “open candidate status” to the European Union, and called for “empty promises” not to be made on the issue.
Regarding the Bucha district, north of Kiev, where hundreds of civilian bodies were found after the withdrawal of Russian troops, Baerbock insisted on “war crimes and crimes against humanity”.
The German Foreign Minister visited the city with the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venicetova and talked about bringing the case to international justice.
“This is the promise we can and must make at Bucha,” said Baerbock.
The announcement that the German embassy, one of the last countries to operate in Europe, will reopen, comes on the same day that the diplomatic embassies of Greece and the Netherlands return to work.
