Imagine retiring soon and spending the rest of your life on a cruise ship visiting exotic places, meeting interesting people and eating delicious food. Very nice, but it’s definitely a billionaire’s fantasy, right?

No, according to Angelyn Burk, 53 years old, and his wife Richard. They live their best lives jumping from boat to boat for $ 44 per night each. The Burks have been calling for a trip home since May 2021 when he retired from his job as an accountant and had no plans to return to his former life. Angelyn went on her first trip in 1992 and changed her life goals forever.

“Our original plan was to stay in different countries a month at a time and eventually retire to cruise ships when we get older,” Angelyn told 7 News. But a few years ago Angelyn ran the numbers and realized they could have started earlier than planned.

Burks spend less than $ 100 a day for room and board.

“We love to travel and are looking for a way to continue to travel into retirement with financial meaning,” he said. They analyzed the offers they could find through loyalty programs and then calculated the potential sale price of their home and realized that their dream was perfectly suited.

Rough calculations make sense. If it cost the couple $ 88 a night to live on a cruise ship, it would be $ 32,120 a year. Currently, the average price of a home in Seattle (Washington) – where the couple lives – is 958,027 dollars, which means a mortgage of approximately 50,000 dollars a year.

Also, on a cruise, the couple does not have to pay for food.

The Burks have made their dream come true because they have been responsible for their lives. “We’ve been frugal all our lives to save and invest to achieve our goal,” he said. “We don’t like materialistic things, but experiences.”

Angelyn says cruises relieve travel stress. “It’s a smooth trip, without the hassle of booking hotels, restaurants and transportation, without breaking our budget,” he explained to 7 News. The couple travels easily with only two bags between them and if they need anything, they buy it on the ship or at the next port.

One thing the happy couple should worry about on their endless journey is the COVID-19. This coronavirus can easily spread indoors, and a cruise ship that recently landed in Seattle had on board 100 people who tested positive for the virus. The CDC recommends that people get vaccinated before boarding a cruise and that immunocompromised people see their doctors before traveling.

Ever since the Burks left their jobs and on the mainland, the Burks have embarked on a 50-day voyage across the Adriatic Sea, overlooking the sights of Europe, as well as a 51-day voyage from Seattle to Sydney, Australia.

The Burks love to travel to Italy, Canada, Iceland and the Bahamas, but they prefer Singapore.

Do you want to leave everything and vacation permanently like the Burks? Angelyn has some tips for those who want to get started.
