As expected, the Senate on Wednesday blocked a bill to legalize abortion. Democrats presented it in anticipation of a Supreme Court decision that would likely overturn, within weeks, the ruling recognizing abortion as a constitutional right across the United States.

The senators closed the door on the bill titled Protecting Women’s Health Act by 51 votes to 49, with Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, who is among the most conservative in his practice, joining 50 Republicans.

Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who are pro-choice, but suggest a more moderate project, remained united with their colleagues.

In fact, it was a procedural vote that would pave the way for a subsequent vote on the bill if 60 elected officials gave their approval.

The result of the vote is expected, but the goal is more to put Republicans in place when a majority of Americans say they support abortion. in all or most cases.

Every American can see which side each senator stands onsaid Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer last week.

Last Tuesday, a leaked draft of the Supreme Court decision indicated that the nation’s highest court seemed ready to overturn Roe v. Wade, who has been protecting abortion rights in the United States for 50 years.

The leak, published on the Politico site, sent shockwaves to the Democratic Party and the pro-choice camp, but was hailed by abortion opponents and most elected Republicans.

The 1973 ruling has until now set the standard in a country where the federal government does not provide a legislative framework on pregnancy terminations.

The Court’s decision is expected in late June or early July.

If the precedent is really reversed, the choice to allow, restrict or completely ban abortion is up to the State.

About 20 states, led by Republicans, are willing to ban it or significantly restrict it. Thirteen of them already have legislation that will take effect immediately or very quickly after the Court’s decision heading in the direction they expect.

This is the second time this year that the Democratic camp has proposed to legislate abortion. Last February, a very similar project approved by the House of Representatives suffered the same fate in the Senate.
