Dixon was arrested in 1985 for sexual assault on another student which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.The genetic evidence obtained in that case linked Dixon to Bowdoin’s deaththat the case at that time was not resolved.

Arizona postponed the executions because of a controversy that led to the July 2014 execution of Joseph Wood, who received 15 doses of a combination of the two drugs and took two hours to die, after breathing at least 600 times before passing away.
In Arizona there are currently 112 inmates sentenced to the death penalty.
