U.S. President Joe Biden, U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade, who has legalized abortion in the country, referred to authorities and sources with knowledge on the subject.
An unprecedented leak of a Supreme Court opinion draft released by Politico last week revealed that the court’s Roe v. Wade said the U.S. Constitution protects a woman’s right to choose an abortion.
The president has asked the White House Gender Policy Council, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Office of the White House Council to come up with a plan to protect women’s rights, press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Tuesday.
A source who has advised the White House on how it can address the issue told Reuters that many of the measures being considered are linked to asking federal agencies to do more.
For example, the White House is considering lobbying the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which controls access to prescription drugs, to increase access to drugs used in medical abortions, the source said. Medical abortions account for about half of all abortions in the United States and must be performed by doctors in many states.
The source said the White House is also discussing making abortion pills available online for personal use from interstate and foreign providers and has asked the FDA to publish a list of reputable and authorized providers.
