European Union leaders will discuss Ukraine’s request to assume candidate country status to join the bloc next June.
The information was released this Thursday (12) by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which holds the rotating EU presidency.
“Ukraine’s request, which is currently under consideration by the European Commission, will be the subject of a leadership-level discussion at the European Council next June,” the ministry said. Said.
The European Commission is the EU’s executive body and has promised to publish its opinion on Kiev’s application for membership by June. The Council of Europe is the bloc’s main political body and brings together the heads of state or government of the 27 member states.
The next regular meeting of the Council of Europe will be held in Brussels on 23 and 24 June. Even if there is a possible positive opinion from the European Commission, it is up to the European Council to officially start the negotiations.
There are currently five candidate countries to join the EU (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey) and the membership process may take years to complete.
