Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the West has started a global economic crisis and a wave of inflation by imposing the toughest sanctions on Russia in recent history over the Ukraine conflict.

Putin’s ordering of a “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24 prompted the United States and its allies to impose sweeping sanctions on Russia and the Russian elite, which the Kremlin chief considers a declaration of economic war.

Putin said Western sanctions are fueling a global crisis affecting the European Union and causing famines in some of the world’s poorest countries.

“This is entirely to blame for the elite of Western countries, who are ready to sacrifice the rest of the world to maintain their global dominance,” Putin said at a televised government meeting on the economy.

Still, Putin said Russia was dealing with pressure.

“Russia confidently copes with external challenges, thanks to both the responsible macroeconomic policies of recent years and the systematic decisions to strengthen its economic, technological and food security dominance.”

The West’s attempt to economically isolate Russia, one of the world’s largest producers of natural resources, has pushed the global economy into unknown waters with rising food and energy prices.
