German authorities announced that they had stopped the “neo-Nazi bombing” project of a 16-year-old teenager, who was influenced by far-right ideology, of a high school.

“The police probably avoided a nightmare” in Essen (west), Herbet Reul, interior minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, told the media.

Joachim Stamp, vice-president of the regional government, thought that “a neo-Nazi attack was probably averted”.

On Thursday morning, elite German police forces arrested the boy at his home after receiving information. Initial investigations showed that the teenager was planning to detonate a bomb at his school.

Reul said police found explosives and materials used to make homemade bombs in the suspect’s home, as well as numerous “racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim” documents supporting far-right arguments.

The young man – the minister added – suffered from “psychiatric disorders” with “suicidal” tendencies.
