David Beasley, executive director of the UN World Food Program (United Nations), has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to reopen Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea, such as Odessa and Kherson.
Food, especially grain, shipments were stranded in Ukraine due to Russia’s blockade of the Black Sea ports to which these materials would be exported.
In an interview with CNN International, Beasley said that millions of people around the world will die because of these ports being blocked.
Asked what he would say to Putin, the UN official said, “No matter how you feel about Ukraine, if you have some compassion for the rest of the world, you should open these ports.”
Beasley also said that if the ports are not reopened in the next two months, the Ukrainian economy will collapse completely. “It’s landlocked like Moldova. Ports are critical,” he said.
Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of agricultural products such as corn and wheat.
Addressing the issue this Wednesday (11), President of the United States Joe Biden said, “this is tons of [de grãos presos nos portos] If they don’t reach the market, many people in Africa will starve because [os ucranianos] We are the sole supplier to several African countries.”
