Hungarian President Katalin Novak, at her inauguration today, denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and said her first visit would be to Poland as an obvious gesture to restore relations with Warsaw.

Hungary’s refusal to ship arms to neighboring Ukraine and its opposition to a planned European Union embargo on oil imports from Russia has strained relations between Budapest and Warsaw, whose two nationalist governments have long been allies in the EU.

Novak, a former Fidesz MP and ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, was elected to the almost ceremonial presidency in March, just before Orbán won another defeat in the April 3 election.

In his opening speech, Novak said, “On Tuesday, May 17, I will go to Warsaw to meet with the president of the Polish people. Mr. President, dear Andrzej (Duda), I appreciate the opportunity to speak in a friendly manner!” said. .

“We condemn Putin’s aggression, the armed occupation of a sovereign state. Let’s say no to the attempt to re-establish the Soviet Union forever,” he added.
