North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said today that the spread of Kovid-19 had plunged his country into “major turmoil” and advocated a comprehensive war to overcome the epidemic, with 21 new deaths reported.

North Korea has imposed a nationwide curfew, recognizing a COVID-19 outbreak for the first time this week. But there are no signs of a strict testing regimen or treatment campaign in the country’s primary health care system.

“The spread of this malignant epidemic is one of the biggest upheavals that has befallen our country since its inception,” Kim said at an emergency meeting of the Labor Party, according to state news agency KCNA.

But if we do not lose focus on the implementation of the epidemic policy, if we maintain strong organizational strength and control based on stubborn party and popular unity, and strengthen our epidemic war, we can do more than overcome the crisis.

Experts said that given North Korea’s limited testing capacity, the reported numbers probably represent a fraction of the total cases, and that the outbreak could lead to thousands of deaths in one of the few countries in the world without a vaccination campaign.
