But it could potentially be serious. It usually starts with flu-like symptoms and swollen lymph nodes. It then progresses to a widespread rash on the face and body.

The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) announced on 7 May that a person who had recently traveled to Nigeria was infected.

It is believed that they contracted the disease in Nigeria before traveling to England.

Colin Brown, director of clinical and emerging infections at UKHSA, said the two new smallpox cases were not linked to the case announced on 7 May.

“While investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection, it is important to emphasize that it does not spread easily between people and requires close personal contact with a symptomatic infected person,” he said.

“The overall risk to the general public is very low.”

Brown said the agency reached out to “health care professionals” who treated the two new cases and “any friend, family or potential contact in the community”.

Initial symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and fatigue.

A rash that usually starts on the face may also develop before it spreads to other parts of the body. It forms a crust that then falls off.

The British government’s public health agency, Public Health England, said monkeypox does not spread easily and most patients recover within a few weeks, but it can cause serious illness in some people.
