Finland will formally apply for NATO membership, Finnish President Sauili Ninisto confirmed.
This application for membership of Finland, an unaligned country historically, is directly related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Sauili Ninisto once said that it has fundamentally changed Finland’s security environment.
Sweden may follow later today.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said it was a mistake for these Scandinavian countries to join the Atlantic Alliance, warning of the consequences political and military.
This announcement came as NATO foreign ministers gathered in Berlin.
Germany also confirmed that the accession of the two countries could take place very fasteven one of the member countries of the Atlantic Alliance, Turkey, is against it.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Sweden and Finland of being lenient with Kurdistan Workers ’Party (PKK) members on their territory. This Kurdish militant group is considered a terrorist entity by Ankara.
