Electricity exports from Russia to Finland have been halted from yesterday to today, hours after a Russian company’s announcement.

100% Russian-owned RAO Nordic, the company responsible for importing Russian electricity into Finland, announced on Friday that it will suspend supply due to lack of payment, at a time when Finland is planning to submit its candidacy to NATO.

Russian exports to Finland are “zero right now. It’s been happening since midnight (18:00 GMT, Friday)”, Timo Kaukonen, director of operations at Finnish operator Fingrid, told AFP.

The grid is working thanks to imports from Sweden, according to real-time information published by Fingrid on Friday, explaining that it can do without Russian electricity.

Finland imports 10% of the electricity it needs from Russia.

Helsinki-based RAO Nordic is a subsidiary of the Russian company InterRAO. On Friday, the company justified its decision by not paying for electricity supplied to Finland since May 6.

It was not disclosed whether the payment problems were related to the European sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.
