Russia announces agreement for evacuation of wounded in Azovstal

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday (16) an agreement with Ukraine for the evacuation of wounded from Azovstal steelworks, the last stronghold of resistance in the city of Mariupol.

“After discussions with representatives of the Ukrainian troops at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, an agreement was reached for the evacuation of the wounded,” the ministry said.

According to the ministry, a ceasefire was made around the industry and a humanitarian corridor was opened. But the wounded Ukrainian army will be taken to a hospital in Novoazovsk, which is under the control of pro-Russian rebels from the self-proclaimed Donetsk Republic.

Also, a commander of the separatists said that 10 fighters from Ukraine surrendered on Monday, the information was not confirmed by Kyiv.

Azovstal is the last bastion of Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol, a strategic city for Moscow’s goal of establishing a land corridor between the annexed Crimea and the separatist Donbass regions.
