North Korea has recorded six new deaths from “fever” just days after the first case of covid-19 was announced on Tuesday (Monday 16, in Brazil) and has assured the military that it has intensified drug delivery.
State news agency KCNA reported that as of Monday night, the country had registered 56 deaths, with more than 1,483,060 fever cases and at least 663,910 medical attention.
The death toll has risen despite leader Kim Jong Un’s ordering a nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus in the unvaccinated population.
According to the KCNA, the military “immediately deployed its strong forces to pharmacies in Pyongyang to distribute medicines”.
Kim has harshly criticized paramedics for seeing medics as a weak response to epidemic prevention, especially for not keeping pharmacies open 24 hours to dispense medicines.
North Korea reported its first case of Covid-19 in the entire pandemic on Thursday, and Kim has the outbreak response under control, according to state media.
The isolated Asian country has one of the world’s most underutilized healthcare systems, with poorly equipped hospitals, few intensive care units, and no drugs to treat Covid-19 or conduct mass tests.
