Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that attempts by the West and the G7 to isolate Moscow, in particular, are exacerbating global food shortages.
G7 foreign ministers pledged on Saturday to strengthen Russia’s economic and political isolation, continue to supply Ukraine with weapons, and work to address the neighboring country’s food shortages resulting from the Russian invasion that began on February 24.
“Attempts to isolate Russia economically, financially and logistically from long-standing channels of international cooperation only exacerbate the economic and food crises,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
“It is worth noting that it is the unilateral actions of Western countries, especially the Group of Seven (G7), that exacerbate the problem of breaking the logistical and financial chains of food supply to world markets.”
Before the war, Ukraine and Russia together accounted for about 29% of wheat production for the world market.
Moscow describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation” to disarm Ukraine and protect it from fascists. Ukraine and the West say the allegation is unfounded and that the war is an act of aggression without reason.
