An adviser to the Ukrainian presidency confirmed on Tuesday that peace talks with Russia are “on hold” because, according to him, Moscow is reluctant to accept that the conditions that existed at the start of the war had changed significantly.
The adviser in question, Mikhail Podolyak, said that the Russian government did not understand “the processes currently occurring in the world” regarding the occupation and that the war was no longer “running on the basis of Kremlin norms”. plans and goals”.
In the words quoted by the Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper, Podolyak added that Moscow also did not want to give up on internal propaganda, and the political elite could not accept that the Russian army had to withdraw “under conditions completely different from what was planned”.
Therefore, the adviser believes that the Kremlin’s position will not change until all international sanctions packages come into force, the “true combat capabilities” of its armed forces emerge, and Russia loses “remnants of its reputation”.
“In my opinion, the strategic goal of the Russians is all or nothing,” Podolyak said, but said that at the moment Kiev’s Ukrainian delegation is not considering the issue of “exit” from the negotiation process.
He added that the talks will continue when “something concrete happens”, adding that circumstances such as the evacuation of the Azovstal defenders and the situation in the Russian-occupied Kherson region will play an important role.
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said on Tuesday that Ukraine has abandoned the negotiation process, where the last face-to-face talks were held in Istanbul on March 29.
