A Japanese man has spent $360,000 in online casinos citing covid-19 benefits and, in his case, promised to refund the authorities “bit by bit” this amount he had inadvertently received – his lawyer told local media. Wednesday to Thursday (18).
The man, originally from Abu (Western) municipality, said, “I’m sorry I spent it all,” according to his lawyer, adding that his client lost all the money thrown away.
This amount of 46.3 million yen was transferred to a single family after confusion among local authorities over arranging an aid program for 463 low-income families affected by the pandemic.
At first, the recipient of the total amount, who was 24 years old, was not accidentally identified. Thereupon, the municipality decided to file a lawsuit against him for refusing to refund the amount on 11 May. Now, the person in question has decided to “return the money, even though I would have to do it little by little”, referring to his client.
Abu Mayor Norihiko Hanada told reporters that the stakeholder was “sincerely happy” with the change of attitude, but would not back down from the case.
“I hope you tell the truth in court,” he added.
