The Ukrainian military condemned on Wednesday that Russian troops bombed a school in Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region and used white phosphorus ammunition in the attack.

According to the Ukrainian news agency “Ukrinform”, the information was published via Telegram by the head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko.

Phosphorus bombs produce flames that cannot be extinguished with water, and their components stick to the victims’ skin, which can burn to the bone.

The use of the chemical component against humans has been prohibited by the Geneva Convention since 1997.

“The Russians destroyed another educational institution, School No. 1, located in Avdiivka in the Donetsk region,” Kyrylenko said.

“At night, Russian soldiers bombed the school with banned white phosphorus ammunition. The school burned down. Luckily, there were no casualties. There were only employees in the building who managed to escape,” he said.

According to Kyrylenko, more than 200 children were enrolled in the now-defunct School No. 1 before the Russian invasion began.

“Guests from all over the country and abroad were studying. Now it is in ruins. There was no military or military equipment in the school. As usual, the Russians are deliberately destroying the civilian structure,” the source said.

The regional military leader noted that since February 24, 416 educational facilities, including 181 kindergartens, have been damaged or destroyed by Moscow troops in Donetsk.

“We will rebuild everything and the Russians will pay a heavy price,” said Kyrylenko.

This isn’t the first time Ukrainian authorities have accused the Russians of using white phosphorus to attack cities. Earlier this month, complaints were made in Mariupol.
