Swedish health authorities announced on Thursday the discovery of a first case of monkeypox in the country. In this way, it joins countries in Europe and North America that have already reported people infected with this disease which is mostly endemic to Africa.

“A case of monkeypox has been confirmed in one person in the Stockholm region,” the Swedish Public Health Agency said in a statement.

The infected personnot seriously ill, but received care“The doctor, explained the authority, who said he did not know where and how the infection occurred.

The symptoms

This disease has primary symptoms fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swelling of lymph nodes, chills, and fatigue. Skin rashes can also appear, especially on the face, and spread to other parts of the body.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) plans to publish the first risk assessment report “early next week,” the European Union (EU) agency said.

The agency recommends, which says “follow the situation carefully”, “isolate yourself, try suspected cases and let them know quickly”.

The nations have seen it

Several dozen suspected or confirmed cases of monkeypox have been seen since the beginning of May in Europe and North America, raising fears that the disease may begin to spread.

The United Kingdom, which reported its first case on May 6, brought the total number of infected people to nine on Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, Spain, Portugal, Canada and the United States reported the presence of confirmed or suspected monkeypox in their territory.

As the Portuguese General Directorate of Health announced in a statement, this viral disease, endemic to West Africa, has been identified in Portugal in “more than 20 suspected cases in the Lisbon region, five of them have been confirmed“.

“The cases, most of them children, all men, had ulcerative lesions,” the health authority said.

In the Madrid region, meanwhile, 23 suspected cases were found pending the results of tests, the regional Ministry of Health announced, raising the initial balance of eight suspected cases.

“Given the characteristics of the 23 suspected cases of infection, this suggests that it was due to contact with mucous membranes during sexual intercourse,” the ministry said in a statement.

The authorities of both countries have activated a national health alert for this disease which is not very contagious between people, there is no cure and usually cures itself.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Tuesday that it wanted to clarify the situation because some of the cases in the United Kingdom appear to have been translated within the homosexual community.
