The U.S. Senate, in turn, overwhelmingly approved $ 40 billion in new military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine on Thursday. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the law into law soon.

Already approved by the House of Representatives last week, the bill passed 86 to 11, with a majority of Republicans joining Democrats. All opposition came from the Republican side.

The amount intended to help Ukraine repel Russia’s offensive, support its economy and meet humanitarian assistance needs is greater than expected by Joe Biden, who requested a 33 billion budget extension last month.

10 days ago, Joe Biden urged Congress to quickly give the green light to the bill, saying in a statement that the existing envelope would be exhausted in approximately 10 days.

Leaders of both parties want to speed up voting by using a methodology that requires the support of all members of the Senate, but Republican Rand Paul, who often files objections in similar circumstances, is vote against it.

The aid plan includes $ 5 billion for global food security issues, which have been seriously compromised by the conflict.

This new aid brings in nearly 54 billion in American aid granted to Ukraine over the past two months.
