More Shanghai residents are today given the freedom to go grocery shopping for the first time in nearly two months, as authorities devise more plans to come out of the citywide Covid-19 quarantine more fully.
The 25 million mall reported no new infections outside of quarantine zones for the fifth day in a row, further cementing its “Covid zero” status each day.
“I’m very happy, the end of quarantine is starting,” said shopper Zhong Renqiu, speaking at a newly opened Carrefour supermarket in the Changning district.
“We rely mainly on government procurement and group purchases,” said Zhong, who stocks eggs, goji berries, black sesame and oatmeal.
But officials are wary of the danger of further infection outbreaks, prioritizing work and production over other activities in efforts to gradually reopen activities and plan to keep most residents inside this month.
Deputy Mayor Zhang Wei said that economic activity is picking up with companies able to work with workers living there, and authorities will allow more people to resume their normal activities from the beginning of June.
The city is “trying to resume a full run and production as soon as possible,” said the city.
