Police said Israel arrested one of the men carrying the coffin of the Al Jazeera journalist who was shot dead in the West Bank last week, but denied the lawyer’s claim that his detention was linked to his role in the funeral.
At Friday’s funeral, the coffin of reporter Shireen Abu Akleh nearly fell to the ground during an operation by Israeli security forces, sparking a wave of international anger.
Abu Akleh was shot in the head while watching the Israeli military operation in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
Amro Abu Khudeir, the lawyer for the Palestinian detained on Thursday, told AFP he was arrested for his role in his client’s funeral.
Lawyer Khaldoun Najm said Israel claimed to have knowledge of Khudeir being a member of a terrorist organization.
“Israeli authorities will arrest more people attending the funeral,” the lawyer said.
Israeli police denied any connection between the funeral and the arrest of Amro Abu Khudeir.
“We witnessed an attempt to fabricate a conspiracy theory that was fundamentally wrong,” police said in a statement.
The Israeli police, who ordered an investigation into the events at Abu Akleh’s funeral, justified the intervention by the presence of what they called “agitators” in the funeral procession, in addition to the firing of bullets at the security forces.
