The Russian Ministry of Defense reported yesterday that 1,730 Ukrainian soldiers surrendered during the week at the Azovstal steelworks, the last stronghold of the resistance, in the port of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine.
“In the last 24 hours, 771 fighters from the nationalist Azov regiment have surrendered,” the ministry said in its daily report on the conflict.
“A total of 1,730 fighters have surrendered since May 16, 80 of whom were wounded,” the note said.
The ministry released a video showing soldiers leaving the facility, some visibly injured and some using crutches. Russian soldiers look for them and check their backpacks.
The ministry said the wounded soldiers were taken to a hospital in Russian-held territory in eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine said it would seek a prisoner exchange, but Moscow did not give a definitive answer on the matter.
