At least 30 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, in Paderborn, a town in western Germany crossed by a “tornado”, a police spokesman told AFP on Friday.
The tornado also caused major material damage in this city of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was hit by a strong storm currently crossing Germany and started after abnormally high temperatures for the season.
The town of Lippstadt, about thirty kilometers away, was also likely hit by the tornado, according to a fire department spokesman, without any damage to be regretted at this stage.
The bad weather has caused extensive damage in this region of western Germany, where law enforcement reports that countless roofs have been removed and trees uprooted.
Photos posted on social media also showed overturned vehicles.
Rail traffic was severely disrupted and police called on residents to stay home.
The weather is moving east
German meteorological services issued a storm warning for Friday, with gusts that could reach up to 130km / h in areas.
Bad weather has already affected the west of the country and is expected to spread further east at night.
