Witnesses cited by Norwegian media spoke of a woman lying in “a large pool of blood”.

Police officer Tom Richard Jensen said at a press conference that the attacker was also slightly injured, but did not need to be hospitalized.

Police did not elaborate on the causes of the incident, but according to the TV2 broadcaster, the suspect filed a complaint for domestic violence last November and the investigation is ongoing.

According to the channel, the man was forbidden to approach his wife, and so far he had complied with the order.

Police said several people were trying to contain the attacker, who allegedly took place near the bus stop between a supermarket and a school, until rescuers arrived.

“I am not aware of previous threats,” the mayor Jan Gaute Bjerke told TV2. “This kind of episode is usually like lightning in a blue sky.”

According to the news on the Numedal School website, he said, “We confirm that there is an incident near the school,” and stated that “health personnel and police” came to the center.

The area where the attack took place is just north of Kongsberg, a town where an archery attack killed five people last October.

The author, a Danish with psychiatric problems, has been on trial in Norway since Thursday, according to experts.
