MOSCOW, May 19 (EFE).- Russia warned on Thursday it will defend property seized in Ukraine, accusing it of tracking a string of Russian property thefts adopted by other countries.
“Our reaction is negative, we will fight it, we will defend our assets,” Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference, in response to a question about the seizure of Russian and Belarusian assets worth approximately US dollars in Ukraine. $1 billion in total.
According to Peskov, the decision of the Ukrainian authorities is “a continuation of the line that has recently become fashionable in many countries, in fact, a line to steal other people’s assets”.
Vadym Melnyk, head of Ukraine’s Department of Economic Security, estimated that the value of Russian and Belarusian assets seized in the country to date is just over $1 billion.
“Firstly, these goods should not serve the aggressor country. Secondly, they should belong to Ukraine and benefit our country,” Melnyk wrote on Facebook.
Among the seized are the corporate rights and assets of a titanium ore mining company, 17,800 wagons, of which 1,625 are loaded, and Russian oligarch Mikhail Fridman’s assets at Alfa Bank.
“The wagons should serve the Ukrainian railways, the funds should be used to rebuild the destroyed cities, the cars should be transferred to the Armed Forces,” said the Ukrainian official.
