(Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday proposed a formal agreement with the country’s allies to reimburse Russia for the damage done by Moscow forces in Ukraine during the war.
Saying that Russia is trying to destroy Ukraine’s infrastructure as much as possible, Zelenskiy said such an agreement would show that nations are planning aggressive actions and that they must pay the price for their actions.
“We invite partner countries to sign a multilateral agreement and create a mechanism that ensures that anyone harmed by Russia’s actions can receive compensation for all losses suffered,” he said in a video speech.
According to Zelensky, under such an agreement, Russian resources and property in the signatory countries will be confiscated. They would then be referred to a special compensation fund.
“That would be fair. And Russia will feel the weight of every missile, every bomb, every bullet fired at us,” he said.
Canada said last month it would amend its sanctions law to allow for the redistribution of confiscated and sanctioned foreign assets as compensation to victims, or to help rebuild a war-torn foreign state.
