The war in Ukraine can only be ended by “diplomatic” means, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said on Saturday, even though negotiations between Moscow and kyiv are in a stalemate.

“The end (of the conflict) will be diplomatic,” he said in an interview with a television channel in Ukraine.

war “it will be bloody, there will be strife, but it will definitely end through diplomacy, ”he added.

“Discussions between Ukraine and Russia will certainly take place. I do not know in what format: there are mediators, without them, in a broad circle or at the presidential level,” he declared.

“I’m sure of that. Kasi there are things that, other than the negotiating table, we cannot resolve“, He added.

In this sense, he stressed that Ukraine wants to return everything, referring to the occupied territories, and “Russia wants not to return everything, that is, not to return anything,” he added.

“We are not the ones who started this war, but we are the ones who will end it. I can repeat these words now, but the meaning is different,” he said.

The result of these talks – the topic of which may vary “depending on the time of the meeting” – should be “fair” for Ukraine, the president stressed.

But he admitted: “The war is very difficult. And victory will be very difficult too.”

stuck dialogue

Zelensky recalled that an indispensable condition for the resumption of talks was that the Russian army did not kill the Ukrainian military buried in the vast Azovstal metallurgical complex in Mariupol, in southeastern Ukraine.

The president noted that Russian troops “provided an opportunity” for Ukrainian fighters to escape alive in Azovstal, after several weeks of siege and continued attacks on that strategic port.

“The most important thing for me is to save as many people and soldiers as possible,” the president said.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mijailo Podoliak said talks between Moscow and kyiv were “on hold”, and considered that the Russian government had shown no signs of ” understanding ”the situation.

Tomorrow, Russia has accused Ukraine of suffering from a “total reluctance” to negotiate to end the rivalry, which began on February 24.

So far, many meetings have been held between negotiators from both sides, but they have not had any concrete results.

The latter, among the heads of delegations, began on April 22, according to Russian agencies.

After failing to occupy kyiv and its region, Russian troops are now focusing their efforts on an offensive in eastern Ukraine. But there too, they encountered strong resistance.
