When Jair Bolsonaro first opened the UN General Assembly in September 2019, his message was clear: Brazil would not accept questioning the sovereignty of the Amazon. And with that argument, any accusation of deforestation was an alien threat to national interests.
Alongside the soldiers who today showed that they could encroach on democracy, the captain reiterated the narrative of his only major ally, Donald Trump, who insisted that multilateralism is not the solution and that powerful dominions must take revenge.
