A 30-year-old man participating in the Brooklyn half marathon died Saturday after falling to the finish line, and five other people were hospitalized, according to the Department of Health. New York firefighters.

Race organizers warned participants about possible discomfort due to the heat wave the city is experiencing, with a maximum of 32 degrees predicted for the day and a humidity of 50%.

However, an official spokesman for the organization said it was unclear whether the temperature rise played a role in the runner’s death or in the injuries of others, according to the New York Times.

The corridor fainted before 9, near the finish line of the race and was taken to Coney Island Hospital (Brooklyn), where he eventually died, they explained from the New York Police Department.

At the start of the race, at 7 a.m., the thermometer read 15.5 degrees and four hours later, when the Fire Department reported the death, the mercury rose to 21.1 degrees.

From the New York Road Runners -event organizers- they released a statement in which they expressed their grief over the runner’s death: “We are deeply saddened by the death of a participant after the RBC Brooklyn Half 2022. And they continued: “The male runner, 30 years old, fell after the race. He was immediately treated by on-site medical personnel and later taken to Coney Island Hospital. NYRR has medical staff assigned from start to finish throughout the race, ready to respond promptly to the medical needs of all runners, spectators, volunteers, and staff. Runners in need of additional care were transferred to appropriate medical facilities. “

“The health and safety of our runners, volunteers, partners and staff remains a top priority for NYRR. In liaison and in consultation with City agency partners and weather experts, NYRR closely monitors the weather conditions before and during the race.

This is not the first time something similar has happened in that race. In 2014, a 31-year-old runner died near the finish line of another New York City marathon after falling.
