At least 10 people have died and nearly 2 million are stranded due to flooding, which has not been seen for 20 years in northeastern Bangladesh, authorities said on Saturday.

Mosharraf Hossain, the region’s chief administrator, said the waters from northeast India destroyed a large dam on the Borak River shared by the two countries, inundating at least 100 villages.

“So far, nearly two million people have been trapped in the floods,” Hossain said, adding that at least 10 people have died since the beginning of the week.

Many areas of Bangladesh are prone to flooding, and experts say climate change is increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events.
