Officials said the storm that hit Germany on Saturday (20) on Friday (20) caused at least one dead, around 60 injured and significant property damage, mainly in the west of the country.

A 38-year-old man in Rhineland-Palatinate was electrocuted while entering a flooded basement, Koblenz police reported.

The mayor of this city with a population of 150,000, Michael Dreier, said at a press conference that the North Rhine-Westphalia region was particularly affected by the tornado, which pierced Paderborn and injured 43 people, 13 seriously.

Police estimate “damages” at “several million euros”.

The extremely rare phenomenon in Germany has also affected the municipalities of Lippstadt and Lütmarsen, two other cities located a few tens of kilometers from Paderborn, the German meteorological services announced on Saturday, adding that there were no injuries.

The storm emerged after several days of unusually high temperatures and caused extensive damage, including the removal of many trees and roofs, in this part of western Germany.

The South was also affected. In the Roth area, a log cabin with daytime triggers collapsed. According to Bavarian police, 14 people were injured, including a woman and a boy in serious condition.
