The mayor who was shot in Paraguay by a group of assassins has died.
Paraguayan mayor José Carlos Acevedo, who he was shot by a group of assassinsdied Saturday night due to injuries sustained in the attack he sustained on Tuesday afternoon in front of the Amambay Municipal Board headquarters.
Acevedo, Paraguayan city mayor Pedro Juan Caballero, was intercepted by men driving a truck and one of them, wearing a hoodie, shot him in the sunlight.
According to witnesses, the 51-year-old leader had just met with councilors when he experienced the attack. In particular, he was in his car, parked near the headquarters of the Municipal Board of Pedro Juan Caballero, the capital of the Amambay department, located about 452 kilometers northeast of Asunción.
The death of the mayor caused great sorrow not only to his relatives but also to a large part of Paraguay’s political leadership. The moment when Acevedo’s coffin was moved in the central plaza of Pedro Juan Caballero towards the municipal palace where it was buried this Sunday can be seen in the local media.
Among those who carried the coffin was the brother of community leader and Amambay governor Ronald Acevedo, who said: “Rest that brother”.
Certainly his daughter, the victim’s niece Belén Acevedo, confirmed the mayor’s death.
The governor directly blamed President Abdo Benítez, in press statements upon arrival at the hospital, for the attack on his brother. “I am sending word to the president of the republic that he is to blame for what happened to Pedro Juan Caballero and what happened to my brother,” he said at the time.

The mayor has been dying for five days
After suffering the attack, the mayor was immediately transferred due to the severity of the injuries to a private clinic in the city, where he was admitted in a critical state, in intensive care and in an induced coma, according to medical report.
As investigators determined, Acevedo received seven bullet hits in the upper body, located two on the right arm, one on the left and four of them at neck level, where he underwent emergency surgery on entering the sanatorium
Strictly speaking, the mayor lost a lot of blood after the attack, and his clinical picture quickly became complicated due to his hypertensive condition and a heart problem. To all this is added the difficulty in a lung.
The mayor had a cardiac arrest within 25 minutes of arriving at the health center, where he was resuscitated and survived at the time, although doctors warned that the situation was very “dangerous”.
On Saturday afternoon, Acevedo underwent a tomographic study of the brain to check his condition. After learning the result, doctor David Peña, head of the Intensive Care Unit of the Viva Vida hospital, where the mayor is located, confirmed the “brain death” of Acevedo.
Finally, around 10:20 pm this Saturday, the relatives of the PJC mayor confirmed his death.

The brutal attack on a Paraguayan mayor
According to records from a security camera, saw the moment where the armed men arrived in a car and began shooting the mayor. In the photos you will see three shooters and a fourth member of the group leading the vehicle, which seconds after the gunfire fled.
After the attack, a car appeared completely on fire on a local road, heading towards the neighborhood of Portera Ortiz, about three kilometers away from the urban area of Pedro Juan Caballero.
Mayor Acevedo is seeking his fourth term. Since 2006 he has been in charge of the Municipality of Pedro Juan Caballero. In 2020 he was indicted, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, for resisting and violating quarantine for violating confinement.
He is the brother of the late MP Robert Acevedo and Governor Ronald Acevedo.
